“Crypto will split into two. RegFi will be unusable and bolted down. It will be toothless. The other side will be the underground DarkFi. It will have bite.”
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing one of the most influential and intriguing crypto developers globally.
Known for his leading role in the early days of bitcoin, Amir Taaki is an anarchist revolutionary, hacktivist, and programmer who has pioneered many open source projects, including Libbitcoin and Dark Wallet. Forbes listed Taaki in their 30 Under 30 listing of 2014.
Driven by the political philosophy of the Rojava revolution, Taaki traveled to Syria, joined the YPG military, and worked in Rojava’s civil society on various economic projects.
Over the last several years, Amir has spent most of his time working with like-minded crypto hackers on building DarkFi.
DarkFi is an anonymous DeFi network. Its objective is to offer flexible private primitives that can be wielded to create any kind of application. DarkFi uses advances in zero-knowledge cryptography and produces a contracting language and developer toolkits to make anonymous engineering highly accessible to developers.
As Amir puts it:
“DarkFi is not a project or a company. We are a community and a movement.
Counter-economics gives us tools to architect systems that empower free communities.
Crypto-anarchy is the tactic of using cryptography for counter-economics.
Privacy technologies are emerging stronger than ever and are completely unstoppable.”
Anonymity as a design space has been largely unexplored. DarkFi is blowing the door to this wide open. Cryptocurrency can birth new technological concepts in the open air of a fully dark, anonymous system. This will be a creative, regenerative space – the dawn of a Dark Renaissance.
During my discussion with Amir Taaki, we covered everything from the power of meme culture to Zero-knowledge Proofs and Halo Arc. We also discussed crypto tribalism and division and leveraging the research of others.
